Identity
I have been thinking about what my identity is over the last few days, partly because of the World Cup. Am I:
- Australian (I was born there and have the right to a passport)
- A New Zealander (I have a passport, this was where my father was born, where I lived and where most of my family live)
- British (my mother was born in England, my maternal grandmother calls herself Welsh, my maternal grandfather was born in Edinburgh, I lived in London for over six years and I have a passport) (If I am British, am I just British, or English, Scots, Welsh or Northern Irish - I have ancestors from each of these areas - or a Londoner...)
- Am I Indian (my maternal grandmother was born there)
- Am I German (I am going to get married to a German woman next year)
- Or am I Czech (I'm living in the Czech Republic at the moment, this is the most tenuous one)?
Of course if one of England, Australia, the Czech Republic or Germany win the World Cup, I think I will claim this as being my own country!
